Slip It In
Smash Burger Shaming, Dunkin’ at a Job Interview, Ray-Ban Meta

Questions or Comments: Slip It In Here!
Would you bring Dunkin’ into a job interview? Matty, Megan and JJ get into the debate over whether walking into an interview with a coffee feels confident and casual or just a little too comfortable. As people who regularly interview candidates themselves, they compare where they’d draw the line and why the person sitting across the table may be the only opinion that really matters.
Then Matty tells the story of ordering a smash burger at The Dirty Shame, cutting it in half and getting called a “wuss” by the waitress in front of his family. Was she out of line, or is a big, messy burger meant to be picked up with both hands and eaten exactly as it comes? Megan and JJ weigh in, and the Slippers are officially being asked to settle the debate.
Megan is also back from Portugal with what she calls one of her best purchases of the year: Meta glasses. She breaks down how she used them for directions, photos, video, audio and identifying what she was looking at while traveling. Plus, Slip-Ups make their debut with corrections on garbage disposals and the OREO Twist, Lick, Vote lineup before Slip It Ins and Pull It Outs bring daily messages from family, crying on social media, concerts, The Moth, another Matty car accident, Howard Stern, Jeff Lewis and a marble-floor mystery.

Podcast Voiceover Opening: In this season two, episode seventy-one, we invite you to bring in the coffee to the room. And we invite your opinions on how you eat your hamburgers. Cut or uncut. And we tackle some of the latest travel hacks. Let's do it. Tune in. You laugh, you cringe, you'll beg for more with a guilty pleasure you can't ignore. Like a drunk text sent at 2 a.m. We slipped it in again.
Megan: Welcome, welcome, welcome, everyone. We're back, slipping it in with you, bringing you the unhinged brunch conversation about everything and nothing all at the same time. But for some reason, you just can't stop listening to it. I'm Megan and I'm here with Matty and JJ. Hi, hi. Hello. Hello, hello.
Matty: I thought maybe today we could start with a little bit of a peek behind this curtain for the Slip It In podcast. Oh, sounds good.
JJ: First of all, do you like the drop the fourth wall? It would say that in the house fives. Drop what? Dropping the fourth wall.
Matty: What does that mean?
JJ: When they say we're dropping the fourth wall, it means that they're talking about the producing part of that.
Matty: Well, then we're dropping the fourth wall. What do you guys think about my new earbuds?
JJ: I like that. I can barely see them.
Matty: I know, I love that. It makes my head look smaller. I like it. Um, also, I think it's been a while since we saw each other, no?
Megan: Yeah.
Matty: Um, I'm sure people, this won't come as a surprise, but sometimes, you know, we live, well, this isn't the surprise part, but we clearly live very busy lives. And sometimes we are recording ahead of schedule. And we haven't seen each other for two weeks. Yeah. So we have a lot to catch up on.
Megan: Thank you very much.
Matty: But um the post-production never stops. So there's post-production going on constantly. And one of the things in post-production, well, two things. The first is it was kind of brought to my attention by myself as I was reviewing some content that I look like a scragley ass. I don't remember.
JJ: Did it brought that to your attention? Yourself? My eyes. Oh.
Matty: My eyeballs.
JJ: I'm like, I have gotten I'm like, I was gonna say, like, we didn't bring it up.
Matty: Yeah, I have.
JJ: Megan and I know better.
Matty: Well, the producers might have said, you could maybe trim your mustache a little bit more. Megan.
Megan: Well, I've said get rid of the mustache from day one.
Matty: Well, I feel like that's just me. I feel like I'm well groomed today and I feel better. Yeah. And I feel like I am giving it, I'm showing up on set as I should.
JJ: Okay.
Megan: Maybe a little stash heavy, but that's just me. But it I'm telling you that I'm giving you a little stash support today.
Matty: I get some stash support.
JJ: Yeah.
Megan: Well, there's a stash going on over there too. I'm just well, yeah, his looks great.
Matty: It's a settled. I love how JJ gets his upper lip some space between the nose and the stash. I tried it. No, no. No, not for you. No, in fact, remember when I showed up to record that one day and I was clearly shaven.
Megan: Oh, I loved that. You loved him.
Matty: That was an accident.
JJ: That was an accident.
Megan: In my book, it was the best thing ever. That's just me.
Matty: Okay. The other thing in post-production that I I thought about, and I'm like, I pitched it to you guys, and we all agree that we should maybe embrace it. But like in post-production, when people are prepping the app for us, you know, we just have conversation. Like the baseline of our topics are typically generally rooted in fact, but then we start to share our perspectives, our opinions. We bring in what we believe to be our truths. And sometimes we get it slightly wrong. And so one of the things as we have gotten more mature in the podcast is I get a little report back on here's some things you might want to just be mindful of. And a lot of times we have just been like, ooh, oops, and we don't address it. And not that we're gonna address every single thing moving forward.
JJ: Thank God.
Matty: Because they're not, it's a lot of times it's not a big deal. But I have a reputation a lot of times for getting it wrong. And I just love that now we get a little bit of a report and we can reflect, and that also maybe makes us show up a little bit differently having done our homework or what have you. But we never know necessarily where the conversation's gonna go. Anyway, I will say this, JJ. You were talking about putting certain things into a garbage disposal, and I'm like, no, no, no, those cannot go on the garbage disposal. So in my post review feedback, I was told that generally speaking, those are not good items, but there is a garbage disposal out there called synchorator. I think it's called. I better get that part right. It's InSinkErator, see, and it can do all the things I said it you should not do, which are onions, banana peels, uh, even cooked fish skin.
JJ: You didn't eggshell.
Matty: You didn't mention onions, you mentioned eggshells, eggshells, and banana peels, and banana, but also the salmon was the key because I didn't want to put the salmon skin so I would freeze it. So I'm just saying it's I'm calling it a slip-up. So we have the slip it ins, pull it out, and occasionally we're gonna sprinkle in some slip-ups.
Megan: Is this gonna be a thing? And with those garbage disposals, they do say InSinkErator on the edge of them. I've seen that. Oh, they do. Yeah. So you can check yours either.
Matty: This was good for you, JJ.
Megan: Yes.
Matty: We're not gonna we don't have I mean you do you boo. You bring something, I'll you get your rapport, you can gloss over. You get you two can get the report. I will make sure you get it. So when no, okay, well.
Megan: Well, the report came back on me. So I want to clear something up. This is this is could be detrimental to a vote, so I need to clear it up. So I previously talked about the OREO Twist, Lick, Vote that OREO has these three flavors. It is testing, and depending on the vote, which is due by October 12th on OREO's website, where people can pick their particular OREO flavor that they want. I previously said the vote was between chicken and waffles, deep fried, and apple pie. Well, I was wrong. Apple pie is out now as a limited edition flavor. It is not part of the OREO Twist, Lick, Vote.
Matty: Nope.
Megan: What is part of the OREO Twist, Lick, Vote is banana pudding, which I did talk about banana pudding that I was told it was a hot item and very good.
JJ: You got it right here.
Megan: Yep. I was able to buy banana pudding. I want to try it. And let me tell you, it was hard to come by. And I've got if people want to try these flavors and are struggling to find them at their stores, here's a tip you can order them online at Target with free shipping with a $35 purchase. So that's what I did because I couldn't find banana pudding in a store, but I could order it. This banana pudding is part of OREO Twist, Lick, Vote, chicken and waffles. And then you also have deep fried, which after trying all three, deep fried is still my favorite, and it's who I'm voting for. Boys, you've now tried banana pudding, you've already tried chicken and waffles and deep fried. What's your vote?
JJ: I'm I'm still on chicken and waffles.
Megan: Really?
JJ: It's going to be chicken and waffles, banana pudding, and then dip fried.
Megan: Banana pudding's pretty good. It's got a nice banana flavor, but it's not a few. It might be a banana. Yeah, it's kind of a light, like banana cream pie type taste.
Matty: I don't feel like I'm tasting anything new. I feel like I've tasted it. It's to me, it seems like, and I'm surprised you like it, JJ, because I think you you're the one that said you don't like the I like banana flavors, so I probably that is I don't, I'm not getting banana forward. I'm getting like the vanilla. Yeah, it's a banana.
Megan: Yeah, it's a light.
JJ: I like the cum I think that probably that's what I like. I like the combo, and I you should see the cream is yellow and white white. Oh, yeah.
Matty: Oh, I do see that. Yeah.
Megan: So it's like a I think it's a traditional golden OREO cracker. Now, this is my opinion, not from OREO. It feels like a traditional OREO uh vanilla flavored uh outer cookie with the traditional OREO cream with a little banana cream. So you get the hint of a banana, but not a big banana. And I enjoyed it. It I would go deep fry banana pudding and then chicken and waffles.
Matty: Wow, you put chicken and waffles at the bottom.
Megan: But they did kind of grow in me. I'll say that. And the doctor was a big fan.
Matty: Yeah. Grow in North Children. Who is the doctor? The your partner. Yes. Yeah, yeah.
Megan: Yeah. Okay.
Matty: We've talked about them before. We have, but for our new listeners, they may not, yes, they might think you're fucking bringing Oreos to your appointment.
Megan: Some people, exactly. Um, some people are big fans of the apple pie, and I'm not an apple pie fan. Um, it was it was just I'm not a big apple pie fan in general, but apple pie limited edition, you can find it. Some people love it. So anyway, vote by October 12th. If you're struggling to find them, do a little order through Target. That's what I did, and they showed up.
JJ: Well, this is a completely random thing, but since we haven't seen each other in two weeks, I really want your opinion about something.
Megan: Okay.
JJ: And you've probably seen her around. I'm just trying to get us away from this like slip.
Megan: The OREO, well, the slip-ups. Well, I wanted to clear it up because if you went to vote, you would be devastated to see Apple Pie was not an option.
Matty: Here's what I'm saying about this whole topic because it seems to we might be divided on it. I don't think in the future we need to bring up things like the garbage disposal, but I used it as my launch pad. Now, this is important. That's OREO, because she's telling people to go out there and vote, and people are showing up on the site, and there's no apple pie to be found. In that, we lose credibility.
Megan: A hundred percent.
Matty: So some slip-ups, yes, some slip-ups, no. But please, JJ, he's trying to get us off the topic, and I'm getting us back on the city. Well, you gotta take those Oreos seriously. I'm sorry, JJ.
JJ: It's been a hot topic. I mean, I've probably you've seen it again, but I've been in up. So Gen Zs are bringing their iced coffees to interviews. You've seen it around? Yes. So I and we all, the three of us, are in positions in the workplace that we do interview people on a regular basis.
Megan: Yes.
JJ: If somebody comes to, which is weird because I it made me think of like, well, I rarely interview people in person, but I have. As of lately, I have done done that.
Matty: We're getting back to that a little bit.
JJ: We're getting back to that. Um, if somebody walks in with their iced coffee or their coffee, what's your opinion about it?
Megan: It's interesting because when I first heard this, I was like, wow. Um, but honestly, like it seems a little ballsy, but I don't hate it. I'm not against it. Like, I feel like in interviews, when I go, people are always offering me, oh, can we get you water? Can we get you caught? Can we get if it's morning, they do offer coffee. Like, is there anything we can get you? I usually always say no. And one interview I had, this was years ago, and I said no, I'm good. And then they said, Trust me, you're gonna talk a lot. They just handed me a water bottle and I did need it and was very happy I had it. So to me, I don't think it's wrong.
JJ: But the thing is though, you I'm you're right, but there is a difference between when it's offered that when you're bringing in into the room with you.
Matty: I agree. To me, it signals, and I'm on the fence because I mean, like at the end of the day, somebody is bringing holding a beverage. I mean, what really is the harm? But also it signals, and I've heard some conversation online to this extent of oh, I got up this morning, uh, I went to my yoga class, I stopped by and picked up some groceries, and I swung through the Starbucks drive-thru, grabbed a coffee, and now I'm here for my interview. Yeah, so it's much like okay, you know, I'm just it's part of my day, I'm bopping in. Okay, I'm here. What do we want to talk about? Kind of so like at the end of it.
JJ: So you couldn't finish your drink before you walk it in.
Matty: Yeah, like maybe a tad too informal. I mean, I don't know. I I I don't know that I if the candidate is suitable for the position, yeah, and they say the right things and answer the right answer in a way that is impressive and they make a good impression, that coffee is not gonna make or break the decision for me.
JJ: But it I think that this is really a generational thing, or is it just it's being positioned that way? It is but so that's that's the thing. So it's being positioned as Gen Zs doing that. But I mean, if we think about it that way, you usually just see this in uh uh an environment that you're actually walking in into a room. There might be a lot of people that are doing virtual interviews with their coffee right next to them, and we're not saying anything about it.
Megan: Exactly, a hundred percent. And I will say this came from a story, I believe, from this Caitlin Wienahan.
JJ: She's a recruiter for many years.
Megan: She's a recruiter. And here's the thing from my own personal point of view, I kind of take the recruiter interviews. I'm very blasé with them. And if I had one in person, I probably would feel more comfortable with a coffee bringing it in than if I'm actually going and interviewing with people who will be my boss or my superiors at a job. Um, I might take that a little more seriously because these recruiter interviews, I look at them as kind of like, oh, yeah, they're just verifying my stuff. Yeah, like a force. For the most part, they're either gonna push me on to the people who will make a decision of whether I get a formal interview, or they're just they're making sure you meet certain criteria.
Matty: And if you do, I mean, and there's not a checkbox for did she or did he bring coffee to the exactly.
Megan: And so I don't think, unless they're real particular, I don't see it as being that big of a deal, especially with the recruiter. Now, if it was the people who are going to be your boss, maybe I would put a second thought into it, but I question is this really happening in the interview with the actual people who will be working with you and be your boss, or is this just with recruiters?
Matty: Well, I think the thing for me at the end of the day is you don't know who I you don't know how the person that's interviewing you on the other side of the table is going to react to it. Yes, because you have an opinion, I have an opinion, but the opinion that matters is the person you're interviewing with. So maybe take things out of the mix that could uh incite or have a someone could have a reaction to. So, like, you know what I mean? Like have your shirt tucked in, don't bring a coffee, like leave your phone with the vibration off, like the things that like because I'm gonna say your qualifications trump all that. Someone else might be like, Yeah, no, I'm big on first impressions. And if you don't put extra effort into something and treat something blase, and that's the way you come across, yeah, then I might go to the next candidate.
JJ: Awesome.
Matty: Yeah, you set it up for us, JJ. What do you where's your head at? What do you think?
JJ: I'm conflicted, to be honest. Yeah, it is conflicting. Um, and I also think that there is like in my head, I I interviewed different levels of candidates. So I do think that it depends on the role to if I'm interviewing somebody at the executive level, I might have some specific thoughts about it. But even you can you can you're struggling right now, but I'm struggling right now because I am a more relaxed in certain environments, so I'm just conflicted because of that. And also because of in-person interviews doesn't happen often either. Um I I I I just don't know.
Matty: I don't know. This is why it got so much attention in mind because people are just struggling with like, well, on one hand, and on the other hand, yeah. Yeah.
Megan: Well, and I will say lots, I'm just very blasé with recruiter interviews. So it's that to me makes the big difference. They're like, oh, whatever, I'm gonna just have the call to see. And so they don't care. I'm gonna go to the interview, and it's it is just fitting it in their detail.
Matty: But this is a recruiter that brought this to the attention, but that's not to say that it doesn't spill over to post-recruiting.
JJ: 100%. So yeah, I agree. What I do know is I'm very happy because there was a pressing hot topic that I was actually thinking about, and also I got us out of the sleep-ups.
Matty: Yeah.
Megan: Well, let me tell you, I love a nice coffee.
JJ: So I do too.
Megan: I kind of was like, oh, really? I think I can do this now in interviews and just bring my coffee in. I'm kind of enjoying it.
JJ: I mean, if you bring it, if you bring bring a tumbler, they wouldn't even know. What? Oh, well, they don't know.
Megan: Oh, yeah. I feel like that tumblers is a whole other topic.
Matty: That is because now you're left like what's in the tumbler.
Megan: Yeah, I don't I feel more comfortable interviewing someone who brought in a coffee that was clearly a Dunkin’, a Starbucks, or something versus a tumbler.
JJ: Yeah, like I was just putting in the tumbler makes it.
Megan: Can you get what was her name?
Matty: What was her name? Caitlin, Caitlin. Can we ask Caitlin, like, where do you stand on tumbler? Let's message Caitlin and say, we want to know where you stand on a tumbler.
JJ: Yeah. We should just reach out. We should.
Matty: All right, you guys. I actually, as we're talking about this, I have another social, I don't know if it's norm or what, but I had something similar happen to me. Not in the coffee world, in the food world. And so I let me just tell the story. I'm gonna set it up. I want to get it all out, and then I'm gonna invite you guys in to get the commentary. But here's what happened I went to a restaurant, I was dining with my sister, my dad, and my stepmother. The waitress recommended a smash burger. She said it's the best we have sold. I love the smash burger. I get the smash burger, it comes out, and it's like a huge smash burger. She leaves. I immediately pick up my knife and I start cutting the smash burger in half. The waitress is approaching the table again and says to the whole table, look at that wuss cutting his burger. Nobody's supposed to eat a burger like that. And I didn't know how to react. But I wondered in that moment, Am I eating burgers wrong? Like, are you supposed to order a giant juicy burger and pick it up with two hands and eat it and embrace the messiness? Or was it acceptable for me to cut this burger? I want to know, listeners, I want you to tell me how you eat your burgers and if I'm truly a wuss or not. And what do you guys think?
JJ: What's a wuss?
Matty: That's JJ. Oh my god, I can't. I'm glad I made you wait because that would have been a rabbit hole. Yes. Oh my god. I know I didn't have a pussy.
JJ: Oh, okay.
Matty: Like a like look at that pussy. And like she said it, you know, with my family there.
Megan: That's 100% wrong.
Matty: And it was a dive bar. It was like a it was called the Dirty Shame and Ada.
Megan: I was just gonna ask where it was.
Matty: And so it was a dive bar, which is very talk about laid back and stuff. And like, you know, you the vibe is very like, hey, I'm here to wait on your table, whatever. But still, I'm like, it was a moment in which maybe I shouldn't be cutting this burger.
JJ: I'm always cutting it.
Megan: I'm almost cutting every single burger.
JJ: I don't cut or sandwiches, like yeah, exactly.
Megan: I don't cut like a Shake Shack burger, but like a larger burger 100%. I also think like she's calling it a smash burger. Smash burgers are supposed to be a little bit thinner.
JJ: So when you're well they're double, they're double smash burgers now, so you can get a double and a triple smash burger. I don't know what I it's just a smash of the meat.
Matty: I don't know what they had, but I will say it was like you know, a big burger enough. Like to your point, it's not a smaller thing. If I were gonna eat a little cheeseburger from McDonald's, I'm not cutting that.
Megan: No, crap.
Matty: But like just the way that's then I would be it was.
Megan: Well, and I don't you should know if it was a double or triple. I'm sure it wasn't.
Matty: I don't either way probably doesn't remember. Well, either way, it's critical to cheese. I saw it, and I, based on the size of the burger on my plate, I knew it would be messy if I did it like that. But like I'm wondering if there's people out there that are just like, that's how a man should eat burger now.
Megan: 100% no. No, one hundred percent no.
Matty: Well, I think our listeners probably have different opinions.
Megan: I'd like to hear it, but because some I'm almost always a larger burger.
Matty: The waitress did.
Megan: Take note of the name of the bar, Dirty Shane. I wouldn't use this woman as being mismanners. Well, no, but okay, but I will tell you from a manner standpoint, it is appropriate to cut it. And I say that because I follow several manner information.
Matty: Here's the thing. I don't think it's not a mismanners conversation. This is just like traditional American burger. How are you supposed to eat it? It's not like hold your pinky out and cut your burger. Pinky conversation. I get what you're saying.
Megan: Yeah, it's appropriate to cut it when it's of a certain size.
Matty: Okay.
Megan: And I'm known to cut it in fours.
Matty: I'm not sure that why is it not? Well, no. Okay, well, I think there might be some other people like that.
JJ: This is not a club sandwich to cut it in four. It's a burger.
Megan: If it's a large burger, you cut it in four. 100%.
JJ: Well.
Matty: Well, okay. Well, who cuts their burger? I cut the burger in half.
JJ: Yes. But to your point, I would not do a uh McDonald's. No, right.
Megan: Or even a shake, shake shop.
Matty: I think you guys, we will be maybe surprised at what some people, other people will say. Because they'll be like, no, a burger is meant to be consumed as like a pick it up with both hands and bite into it, let the juices flow, get messy with it. I'm I'm not saying it's right or wrong. I'm just saying I think that there's a population out there that that's their belief.
Megan: I think that's a smaller than you might think population. I'd like to do that. And also some people don't have a use of two hands.
JJ: Is it smaller than you hear, Megan? Is it smaller than the mustard community? Jesus Christ.
Megan: The mustard community was loud and they're still loud.
Matty: I knew they do hear me were coming out. She goes, Well, and some people don't even have use of two hands.
Megan: Well, this is a story.
Matty: I can you even all right. That was my track.
Megan: All the more reason it shouldn't, you shouldn't be shamed for cutting a burger.
Matty: All right. Well, that's what happened on my travel adventure to the west side. Dirty shame.
Megan: Well, I love it. And speaking of travel, I'm just back from a mother-daughter trip in Portugal.
JJ: And I had That's far cry from the dirty shame. Ada from Ada to Portugal.
Megan: From the dirty shame to Lisbon. I have another travel situation that came up that I'm curious to hear about. Okay. So, you know, whenever you travel, you always get kind of your limits tested in one way or the other. And especially with international travel.
JJ: It's the only man.
Megan: Yes. Well, definitely. And, you know, here in America, we're big on AC. In Europe, AC is not asywhere we went, is not a necessity. Yeah, but all the hotels we had, like in this particular trip, I was trying to maximize my Marriott points. So I told my mom, we're gonna stay in Marriott's wherever possible.
Matty: Yeah.
Megan: So everywhere we went in Portugal, we stayed in Marriott.
Matty: As if your mother even had a say.
Megan: A Marriott. Well, you know what? She was happy because they all had AC, they all had certain accroutements that were used to us Americans. Yes. The one place we could not get a Marriott or any other chain hotel, we also stayed at a Hilton a couple of times, was in Madeira. So we went to this island. Yep. Oh, wait. What is it?
JJ: Madeira.
Megan: Oh, I got it.
JJ: Oh my god. That sounds so good.
Megan: What JJ said. Um we went there. It's a small island off of it. Yes. It's known as being the Hawaii of Europe. Yeah. It's basically a volcanic, uh, a volcanic island. It was uh created by volcanoes years ago. So it's basically all sorts of like rock cliffs and stuff.
JJ: It's so beautiful.
Megan: So it's very beautiful.
JJ: So there might be a little bit chain.
Matty: The only one that hasn't been to Madeira. Madeira.
JJ: Madeira. Madeira.
Megan: So anyway, that's the one place we did not have a chain, American chain hotel. Yeah. So I found a hotel that's actually like a European chain hotel, and it was right on the ocean. Beautiful ocean front balcony with gorgeous views. I didn't know that the rooms they looked okay, but it's like maybe they could be a little old, you know, whatever. So we walk into the hotel. It's they had shown pictures online, and again, it looked very nice and fancy, but in a kind of like 60s kitsch way. So I took note of that. I also took note of everyone around us looked 80 and above. Okay. We check in, we go to our room. To get to our room, you have to take two different elevators. It's a whole process. They take us down the hallway to our room and it's instant smell. This very like chemical, moldy, I don't even know what smell. And I'm like, this is gross. Then we go to our room, it's still in the room. We try to get the air going. The air's working kind of, but it doesn't seem like it's getting cold. It kind of just seems like the fans blowing around. We go to park the car, which they said it's only available if you find a spot. Well, parking is literally down almost a direct up and down like ramp into this like random parking areas under a bridge.
Matty: Okay, I'm taking all these notes.
Megan: Yes. So basically, I did find a parking spot, but it was touch and go very difficult to get this parking. And then you have to walk up the steep.
JJ: So the situation was the hotel.
Megan: Well, my mom was like, basically, this is not safe parking here. Then it takes about 10 minutes to get to your room with these two different elevators and the smell. And I'm like, this smell is awful. So we're like, should we leave?
Matty: Okay.
Megan: That should actually have you ever left a hotel room?
JJ: We did.
Megan: You did?
JJ: I did with my friends once, yeah. In Madeira?
Megan: In Vegas.
JJ: So But it was just like a because it was like a sewage type of smell in the room.
Megan: Yeah, similar.
JJ: And after that, we got an upgrade.
Megan: Well, so remember South Africa.
Matty: Oh. We had an air conditioning problem and he came to fix it. At 3 a.m. 3 a.m. And then I was kind of coherent, kind of not, cast out and woke back up at 4 30 in the morning. Yeah. And I could see it. It was 95 degrees on the room. And I could just see legs coming out of the ceiling. Oh, he was still in there. And I said, sir. Stop talking to him. I said, sir. I was up. Oh, you were in the house. JJ was awake, but I said, sir, you're still here.
JJ: Next thing we know, with though we were in the presidential suite the rest of the trip.
Matty: True story. The rest of the trip. Love it.
JJ: So I would change hotels.
Matty: I would change floors to the presidential suite.
Megan: Well, so it was late at night, and I'm like, we can't deal with it now. We'll just suck it up. But all night I was smelling that. And in the morning, I was like awful. So I'm like, I immediately go look what our options are. Well, for only 60 euro more a night, I found a five-star Michelin level hotel with a Michelin restaurant and a spa. And I'm like, that's it.
Matty: This is really white woman.
Megan: We need to go. It was it was White Lotus, 100% White Woman. White Lotus, I thought it was like a White Lotus hotel. And I'm like, look, mom, this is what we can get for 60 more euro with free parking and breakfast.
JJ: All right. I am surprised with your the knowledge that you have with traveling and everything that you had not find that Michelin star hotel before you bought the sixty smelly hotel.
Megan: So I'm like, I'm going to an island that's the Hawaii of Europe. I want ocean fronts.
Matty: So can you just tell us how it ended?
Megan: So we go down. Oh, don't have everything. I know. No, don't wrap it up. You gotta just give me a minute. I will give me a second.
JJ: Okay.
Megan: So we go down, we say we want to leave to we had already packed. We're like, we just want to check out. We've spent one night here. It's not working for us. This smell. They're like, you have to talk to the lady.
Matty: The little lady? The lady. Oh, I thought you said the little lady.
Megan: So we had to go take an elevator up and go talk to this lady.
Matty: Because the lady is not on the same floor as Jimmy.
Megan: No, nothing is on that floor.
Matty: You have to go up the floor to talk to the little lady. Yeah.
Megan: So then she called makes calls. She's talking all in Portuguese. And then finally she's like, okay, well, I've got to show you a couple other options. We're like, okay. So then we had to go tour two other rooms. They were bigger rooms, but they were still very old. They didn't smell as bad, but they didn't have as good of a balcony or anything else. They were kind of the same level. And we're like, no, no, no. I claimed I had an autoimmune disease. I didn't know what to do.
Matty: With this story.
Megan: I had an autoimmune disease. I feel that I have to leave.
Matty: Yeah.
Megan: So finally they let us out.
Matty: Okay.
Megan: Well, they we wanted to make sure.
Matty: Another segment that can get us off of this topic.
Megan: Well, we had to get a refund. So I wanted to make sure they were letting us out and we had to go through all this rigmark.
Matty: So you left.
Megan: And we went to the five-star hotel.
Matty: How was the don't give me the full rundown? Just say if it was worth it.
Megan: Amazing.
JJ: Five stars. Until the very last night. No. No.
Megan: But I just have to say this because you brought it up about South Africa.
Matty: Oh, my fault.
Megan: We had an AC issue where again, my mom's in bed. I have a little guy up in the ceiling trying to fix our AC.
Matty: Little lady at the other one.
Megan: Well, this he was kind of a cute Portuguese guy. But I was blow drying my hair and all power went out in our whole group.
Matty: Oh, God's sake.
Megan: So I'm in a room.
Matty: We're gonna have to have episode two. You're in about okay. Oh, well, just when it was getting good.
Megan: For hours. And then they gave us that. They gave us a new room. unknown: Oh.
Matty: Oh, you got a new room at the second hotel? Girl, do you own the hotel now? Oh it was amazing.
Megan: Wow. Quinta La Casa Branca. I bet I love you.
Matty: I can't. I bet the sympathy messages are gonna just flood right in here. Yes. We're gonna get a hundred like oh yeah. We feel so bad. Well, I'm glad you had a good time. Good, good trip.
Megan: It was a great trip.
Matty: Amazing trip to have with your mom.
Megan: Yes, I loved it. loved it. And I have to tell you something that I vacillated on before the trip. And up until like two days before leaving. And I'm like, I've got to pull the trigger. And you know, Matty, you're an owner of Meta glasses. I kept thinking, do I want these Meta glasses for this trip to Portugal? I wasn't sure. I'm like, do I need them? We tested out the translation with JJ. They're a little slow on the translation. I'm like, I don't know. And Matty, you finally sold me. You're like, the best thing is you can just look at things and say, hey, Meta, what am I looking at? And I'm like, okay, I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna buy them. Let me tell you, it I think is my best purchase of the whole year.
Matty: I have them on. Hey Meta, what am I, what are you looking at? She's gonna, yeah. She's like, oh, I'm looking at a very successful podcast.
Megan: So for 100%. Thank you, Meta. We appreciate it. I love you, Meta. Thank you. Yes. So for anyone who doesn't have Meta glasses, if you travel at all, I highly urge you to get them. They are amazing. And let me tell you, going into this, Meta has uh Ray-Ban glasses, Oakley's, and then they just have plain Meta branded glasses. I thought for sure I'm getting Ray-Bans, which is what Matty's wearing. But I went, this is a tip if you're looking at them. I went to Sunglass Hut and tried on a bunch of them. And trying them on, I realized the Ray-Ban Wayfarers are the traditional wafers that are quite large. They were a little big on my face. The Meta-branded Adventurers are the same Wayfarer square shape, but much smaller. And they were they're $100 cheaper. So for $299, you can get the Adventurer, which is just Meta-branded, where the Ray-Ban Meta glasses start around $380,400, and the newer models are $450 and up.
JJ: And I gotta say, too, when it comes to um I I am a Ray-Ban aficionat.
Matty: Did you say aficionat? Yeah. Yes, I love it. Love that. Me too.
Megan: I thought meta designs and colors might be tempting for me because yes, so the adventurer glasses, they have um the adventurer, which is the kind of Wayfarer dupe, but they also have cat eyes and different, and they come in like five, six different colors with different tints on your lenses.
Matty: I love mine, and I'm gonna give uh credit where credit is due. This was a gift that JJ got me. I love them. I have three, I have three lenses for them. I have the lenses they came with, but then I also have need some corrected corrected vision. So I can pop in a prescription clear and a prescription sun, and I'm on the run, I'm on the go. Yeah, and I love it. I love it.
Megan: And let me tell you some of the features for people who aren't familiar with those. Okay. We didn't. So I thought we can one, if you put in directions like in Google or Meta has their own navigation in your phone, it tells you in your ear, with you're just wearing the glasses, uh, your directions and where to go. So that's amazing when you're traveling around and having to get walking directions to places. Also, all you do is do a little click on the button on your glasses and it takes pictures.
JJ: Well, you can say it.
Matty: You can also say, Hey, Meta, take a picture or a video. But to Megan's point, she likes to be on the DL. Yes, she likes to be on the D. There's a light. There is a light that will come up.
JJ: Yeah. There is.
Megan: But people aren't aware.
JJ: And I will say, as the trip Especially if there's the if there's daylight, then it's the flash that's necessary.
Matty: Do you have like an album of hot Portuguese guys? Because you were doing it.
Megan: My mom thought the men were very attractive.
Matty: Well, I go, I agree with your mom.
Megan: I um towards the end of the trip was just using the glasses to take pictures because instead of having to pull out your phone to take pictures, I can just go click, click, you do a little bit longer hold, and you can do a video and just look around and it takes your video. It's amazing.
Matty: I'm not trying to diminish the review, but I think a lot of people know the functionality of oh, I didn't until you got them.
Megan: I had no idea.
JJ: And I do have to say though, like some people might be skeptical about the audio, and I was actually even surprised. It is because they're people immediately like, well, they're not in your ears. You're not gonna hear anything.
Megan: Oh, no, you hear it.
JJ: The technology of it, you can hear it as if they were like locked in into your earbuds.
Matty: Like it's just I loved it when I because I could be walking down the street and I could have music playing, but be talking to the both of you at the same time, and it's not disruptive. It's just like it's like elevator music. It's like in the background, I can hear it. Yeah, it puts a pop in my step, but yet I can still I mean, but I if I need to tune you all out, I can just be like, hey Meta, a little louder, please.
Megan: And the big thing is you can look at anything and say, Hey Meta. Well, I think this is the point. You think, hey Meta, what am I looking at? And it will tell you. And it was 100% accurate every single time. Right. But I will say it likes to add its own little commentary, and sometimes I could let go of that. But highly, highly recommend them. I'm so excited for my next time to use them. I feel like I'll only use them really traveling, but yeah, I might use them other times.
JJ: Yeah. I might not be fully sold on a slip-up, but I am fully invested in a slip it in and a pull out.
Megan: Yes. Well, okay.
JJ: Oh, we've heard it.
Megan: We heard it.
Matty: Matty is your point.
Megan: Well, it's time to go ahead and slip it in and pull out, but I'm not going to be able to do that.
Matty: You need to hydrate. You need to hydrate.
Megan: I just wanted to say we're we have links to the different metaglasses on our Link Tree. Fair enough. So check them out.
JJ: Fair enough.
Megan: Research what you like and buy them.
JJ: Matty, do you have a slip? Do you want me to?
Matty: I I go for it. It's up to you.
JJ: Mine is short and sweet. Oh. Um, my slip it in is every single morning between 9 45 and 10 15, I get a message from my aunt.
Matty: Well, I love that's a slip it in for me. I love your aunt.
JJ: It's on time. And it's usually just sometimes it's just a picture of some sort of like wishing you a good day. That's nice. And sometimes I'm like, another picture.
Matty: You know, it's like you don't like a good morning test.
JJ: I mean, I do like she knows.
Megan: She knows not to say good morning.
JJ: I was reflecting, I was reflecting. She does, she does know about like she's not sending me a full-on written good morning. Yes. She wants to send her phone. She's gonna send me a message. She knows better. And there was a I was reflecting back to it this past week, and I said, I wonder if like she's not like sometimes I'm like, I wish that she used to say something on it. And she would say it as if if I engage in the picture, she would just reply back to me. But it's just on time, every every single morning, between 9 45 and 10 15. I know for a fact that she's gonna send me a picture.
Matty: That's so nice.
JJ: And I I just try to embrace those little moments.
Matty: Are they pictures of her?
JJ: No, it's just pictures wishing a good day that she finds, and I'm sure that she's probably Googling.
Megan: I thought she was like, Oh, here's the Puerto Rican photo for you.
JJ: No, it's just like and to that point that she I think that she's actually Googling the picture.
Matty: Oh, has she ever missed her time frame? Because that's where panic would set in. It'd be like, why didn't my aunt like comes in at 1017 instead of 1015?
JJ: So I'm glad that you say that. True crime. This is the reason why I'm reflecting back. There was one day that I was like, oh, this is weird, it's like 1030. So what I did was like, I am going to search a picture and send it to her.
Matty: Oh, nice.
JJ: So I said, it usually goes with the picture. Because she is my only like connection to my dad. Like she's the only one alive. So I'm like, I am always like trying to check in with her. So I just send her a picture and she's like, Oh my god, I slipped in a little bit today. So you you beat me to it. So it was just like sweet moment. So I think that that's that's a it's a beautiful moment that I I I embrace with me.
Matty: Um tell give her my number because I love you.
Megan: I love your aunt.
Matty: There's a whole we could talk about it. We don't have time, but yeah, Megan. I have a special, I have a special. Oh, right. We all know his aunt. Um, yeah. Yeah.
JJ: My pull it out a few episodes ago, I talked about my um crying day on purpose as a slipping in.
Matty: He doesn't like a reoccurring. No, this is not.
JJ: This is not it.
Matty: Oh, okay.
JJ: My pull it out is I don't know if you every any of you have seen it on TikTok or Instagram sometimes. People crying on the camera. Because for less for they have a bad day and they're just crying again.
Matty: No, I'm not sure.
JJ: And they just take a moment to like, I make because I make when I'm crying or having a bad day, the last thing I want to is like, let me just put myself on live. It feels performative. It does. It does. It just takes a like they're trying to just away that moment.
Matty: It doesn't make it feel authentic.
JJ: Not at all.
Matty: Or it's maybe it is off, maybe they truly are crying, but like the camera on.
Megan: They're trying to go viral.
Matty: Yeah. Yeah. 100%. It's all for the line. Okay. I'm gonna have a slip it in that is all encompassing of the last couple weeks, and my pull it out will be baked in as well. Um, we've hinted at this a couple times of being like it's been a couple weeks since we got together. I had a lot going on in the last couple weeks, um, all in this country, but nonetheless, nonetheless, I was busy.
JJ: No issues with hotels or anything, right?
Matty: No hotels. I went to two concerts and one moth and had one. Survivor premiere. I'm putting that all into my Slip It In. I went, I have the sweatshirt on. Uh, this is a Mumford and Sons. I saw Mumford and Sons in Grand Rapids at their new amphitheater.
Megan: Love Marcus.
Matty: Love Marcus as well. He was looking good with his mustache, might I add. Not really. Yes, he was. You weren't there. And then I also had a birthday gift. Yes, my birthday's in June, but I celebrated it Tuesday. She got me tickets to go see Teddy Swims, who put on an amazing concert at Little Caesars Arena on Tuesday. And then wham bam, thank you, ma'am. On Thursday, I went to uh the moth, which I've talked about before. Yeah. This time I'm just gonna say this. Okay. The first time I went, I went with a friend and a friend of a friend. And that was one experience. This time I went and uh the person I was gonna go with had to back out last minute, and I went by myself. Whole different experience. I bet it's a great community. Everyone knows that they're going there to listen to like stories and just enjoy authenticity and people telling stories. I was talking to somebody else about it. I'm like, I'm a little nervous. I ended up meeting everyone around me. Nice. There were two guys sitting to my right that are that they were trying to find a group of judges. You needed three, and they're like, Will you be on our team? And so I got pulled in. I was part of a judging panel. That's awesome.
Megan: That's exciting.
Matty: They were cute guys. Okay. Yeah, I I think one was and one wasn't because I was picking up a vibe. And then this lady in front of us with her group of friends, I she must have bought her Halloween candy early. She started talking to the three of us, and then she's like, ooh, she hit her purse, she picked her purse up and tapped the bottom of it, and then started giving us individually wrapped candies. I have some here. She gave me Whoppers. Oh, I love Whoppers. I love me and Whoppers. These are Jolly Ranchers, like uh Taffy. I mean, but she got it was to the point where we were like, we can't do it. She would turn around and be like, here, take this. She'd be shoving these candies at us. So funny. That's cute, though. They were, we were all talking. It was a great experience. Um, so two concerts, and the moth or my slip it in, my pull it out is on the way back from Mumford & Sons on the expressway. I got in a car accident. Oh no. I got rear-ended and not the kind I want. I got it came at me hard and fast, like 70 miles an hour. Wow. Again, my best friend JJ was with me. I was like, we got whiplash. And I don't know if you want to talk about the crickets, JJ, but you're welcome to. It's the most bizarre thing.
JJ: There was the yeah, there were two crickets. I think they were crickets. I think I think they were long-legged crickets in your car.
Matty: Well, we got out of the car once we pulled off to the left to assess the damage.
JJ: And the crickets were like, we're gonna go.
Matty: And JJ got back in. I think they got onto JJ when he got out of the car. Probably. Oh, yeah. And then he freaked the fuck out. Like the police officers at the and he's like, and and I thought it was a one and done. Yeah. Five minutes later, he's like, Oh my god, there's another one!
JJ: Yeah, I think there was like a it there were grasshoppers, but so now I gotta do the whole fucking take my car.
Matty: It wasn't my fault. Yeah, the guy said he we think he was on his phone. He told the police officer that it was the bad time to take a drink of water. Clearly, going 70 miles an hour on the expressway. And then he said clearly I was you know too close to you. I saw the story.
Megan: You've been texting or messaging 100.
Matty: So, but everyone is safe and sound. It's just an And he has insurance, sounds like so.
Megan: That's good. That's good. Now, this is accident number what for you.
Matty: Funny you should bring this up because I you know what's funny about that? I think it's like 12th or 13th. I have the number. Oh, what's very interesting is I had a conversation just last weekend with somebody to say, you know, on the podcast, we've done 71 episodes or 70 at the time, and I've yet to talk about my proclivities for car accidents.
Megan: Oh, you you jinxed your and I said, I 100%.
Matty: And I said, I I gotta find a way, and I've got a really great story that I'll maybe bring to the next one. Because I told it at the Elks Club that night, and I'm like, it just hasn't worked its way naturally into the conversation. Fast forward that weekend, I get into another car accident, and to answer your question, it is number 15.
Megan: Oh, even more than I thought. Oh my god. I thought 12, like I could be close. I thought probably I was still over.
Matty: I want to provide context to that, but tune into next episode because I'm gonna break down my car accidents next episode, or maybe two episodes. I don't know, but we don't have time for that. Yeah, we don't have a time yet.
JJ: And I'm gonna talk about the day that my PowerPoint for Matty's birthday was shut down because of the pictures of his some of his accidents behind that.
Matty: Oh, because I'm like, censor. Shut it down, shut it down.
JJ: Tune in, tune in for accidents.
Matty: You both have been in accidents with me, no?
Megan: No, I never had this one. I had plenty of my own, but not 50.
Matty: You're the only close circle friend that can say that. Everyone else has been in one of them. I've I've all right, all right.
Megan: All right, well, my slip it ins and pull it outs are quick and fast. My slip it ins are Howard Stern's new HBO show, is back, and Jeff Lewis is back on Bravo with Still Flipping Out. It just premiered a week ago. If you haven't seen it, yep, you haven't seen it, check it out 100%. Howard Stern is just basically his new HBO show, is kind of like his old um E! show that used to be on that's just him talking uh from his radio show.
Matty: I found it meh.
Megan: I love it. I love Howard.
Matty: But you're big, yeah.
Megan: Yeah, I love Howard. And if if you haven't seen Flipping Out.
Matty: Still Flipping Out. The guy was uh, I don't know, you they all have these side sides where he was talking about being uh Chris Wilding, yeah. He had a he's a messy bottom, like he has digestive issues, but he likes he's getting rimmed, yeah. Getting rimmed. Oh, yes. I'm like, this is too much.
JJ: Well he might he minded the pumpkin spice um dude wipes that.
Megan: Yeah, here's a fun fact Chris Wilding, Howard several this was years ago, fixed up Andy with him, and Andy went on a date with him, but it didn't go anywhere.
Matty: Oh and probably because of his bowels.
Megan: Well, but he didn't have the bowel situation.
Matty: And he had like a fucking sty on his eye. And I'm like, this guy's a mess.
Megan: Anyway, he's previously not been as well. Anyway, sorry, but anyway, Still Flipping Out is awesome. If you haven't watched it yet, I highly recommend checking it out. Um, my pull it out is for the third time, my cleaning lady has spilled something on my marble tile floor.
Matty: Your brand as a podcaster, I was just it's too much.
Megan: Well, I have to just say it it like stains kept showing up on this marble floor in our guest bathroom.
JJ: I'm gonna button it.
Megan: And I've had to like assess like who's doing this, where it's happening. And we had one time the windows getting clean, one time we had house guests, and the cleaning lady was there all these times. But this week she leaves the next morning. What are all these spots on my floor? So I've been having to clean it, but it's staining the marble. So I had to spend you talk to her about it. Yeah, I've took pictures, I had to clean up.
JJ: Well, she is in probation.
Megan: Yes, exactly. But you know, it's hard to find it. Oh, it seems hard.
Matty: It seems hard to find.
Megan: It's not somebody you want to get rid of.
Matty: It's hard for you and the doctor. Oh, God. Oh, wow. Yes, please play us off. Play us off.
Megan: Until next time, everyone, check out our Linktree at Slip It In Podcast. We want to hear from you. We want to know what you've been experiencing after hearing everything from us.
